Planned Parenthood has two peer internship openings:
Latina Outreach Coordinator ( $1,000 stipend ) from August to December. Ability to speak Spanish fluently required. Open to students of color only. Entre Amigas is a lay health advisor program for adult Spanish speaking Latina women run by Planned Parenthood. Its objective is to train women in the Latino community to provide information and education on healthy sexuality and related reproductive health care topics and referrals for subsidized family planning services. The program is designed to build on the strengths of Latinas within the community to help improve overall community health. The intern's assignment will facilitate successful implementation of Entre Amigas . The intern will participate in all program activities and sessions. Duties will include research, identification of Spanish language program materials, communication with program participants, and purchasing and preparation of program materials. The intern will have the option to select a program topic and present one session to the group. Additional requirements: excellent communication and coordination skills, keen attention to detail, ability to take initiative and have interest in health care and health disparities. A basic level of knowledge about current topics in sexuality and a bi-cultural background are a plus.
NeighborAid Volunteer. The NeighborAid Program is a 10-month informal, community-based peer education program for adults. NeghborAiders attend a minimum of six training sessions related to reproductive health care. Monthly educational meetings will follow the initial training. After the training, NeighborAiders are asked to share their knowledge informally with friends, neighbors, coworkers, etc. NeighborAiders are responsible for documenting the details related to these chats, i.e. person(s) contacted, length of discussion, topics discussed, etc. When you combine all the NeighborAid volunteers they educate an average of 500-600 individuals during the 10-month session, more than one person per day. Participants come from diverse backgrounds in terms of race, religion , socio-economic status and sexual orientation.
