"Man is a social being. Expressed differently: The human being and all his capabilities and forms of expression are inseparably linked to the existence of others, just as he is linked to cosmic facts and to the demands of this earth." --Alfred Adler

"I tell parents always: 'I can see you are on the right track,' even when I am convinced of the contrary, for if I want to be of use, I must know how to choose the adequate method."
--Alfred Adler

Program Information

The Certificate in Parent Coaching is designed to train already licensed mental health & chemical health professionals (i.e. Marriage & Family, Psychologists, Clinical Counselors, Social Workers, LADC, School Psychologists, School Counselors, Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurses, Teachers at all levels, Occupational & Physical Therapists, Parent Educators) and students in AGS clinical licensure track programs (Marriage & Family Therapy, Clinical Counselor and School Counselor) in one of the fastest growing areas of the parent-family support field. The purpose of the coaching relationship is to provide a safe, non-judgmental, supportive arena for parents to learn new, effective parenting skills.

Working directly with children often results in frustration, as the parents have made little progress in understanding the real issues behind the child behaviors. With this certificate you can build skills that enable you to empower parents with easy-to-learn techniques that bring out the best in their children. The courses will provide training in highly effective methods that parents can apply right here and right now. There’s no need to wait for parents to “get their act together” or come to grips with their own childhood experiences. You’ll be able to teach them readily applicable strategies for quickly bringing out the best in their children, even as you lead them to an increase in their own self-esteem.

Anxious parents often breed anxious children. If you can empower the parents to end the  arguing, opposition, tantrums, and physical aggression, you can help to lower THEIR anxiety.  With lower anxiety in parents, the children have a much better chance at lower anxiety themselves!

We’ll talk about coaching parents through divorce, adoption, blending families, grief, competition in school, special education issues, challenges with teens, sexuality...and whatever issues you bring to the training.  Imagine how you’ll benefit from the exchange of powerful ideas in a class of experienced mental health professionals...for two classes, not just a one or two-day conference!  The contacts you make in Parent Coaching class can become career-long collegial friendships.

The time has come for parents to step up and take control at home.  Just imagine a world where parents know what to do in the face of adversity with their children because you have played a vital role in teaching them new techniques.  That’s what you have to look forward to with the Parent Coaching Certificate!

Classes run from July 9 – August 6 and from August 20 - September 17, 2008.  Proof of licensure required for those not AGS students. Call Ev at 612-861-7554 to register today!
