Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual and Transgender, (GLBT) "Coming Out": A review and synthesis of theories and applications.

There have been several studies which discuss and examine the different stages of the “coming out” theories related to the Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgender (GLBT) community. This paper will attempt to synthesize and examine several aspects that clinicians need to be aware of when working with Gay and Lesbian Clients. It will examine three different theories about “coming out,” that will help clinicians to understand individuals that are struggling with gender identity issues. The paper will also attempt to discuss the internal emotional struggles that an individuals deal with in sorting out their own gender identity. Finally this paper will discuss some key Adlerian therapeutic techniques and tools that can be used while working with Gay and Lesbian couples. It will also include a list of common terms used within the Gay and Lesbian Community and a list of GLBT resources.
