This course will introduce students to professional roles, functions, and collaborations with other helping professionals. The development of a professional identity for counselors, psychotherapists, advocates, consultants and coaches will be discussed. Students will explore the personal characteristics and behaviors that might influence helping processes (from intake to termination of services), including age, gender, ethnicity and cultural differences.
The course will constitute a strong foundation for the Online Adlerian Studies Emphasis Area's extended residential weekend. During the extended residential weekend, students will attend lectures, participate in training labs and seminars presented by Adler faculty, and engage in other live educational and community-building activities. The Residential Weekend topics will include stress work, self-care, and therapeutic process as impacted by the facets and processes of professional identity formation. Hands-on experience will build a strong foundation of the course.
